Mental Preparation through Visualization As a competitor in Jiujitsu, and just life in general, it is paramount to appreciate the importance of mental preparation. Visualization is a key component of a successful training program. Studies have shown that small but measurable neuro-electrical signals are activated in the brain and sent throughout the body when individuals mentally rehearse performing a physical skill (Luce, S.N.) • By visualizing performance in the actual environment that we compete in, or really any environment in which we execute our jobs in, we can introduce the brain to the sensory feedback we will receive, identify physiological responses (rapid breathing, increase heart rate, shakes, etc.) and train on ways to improve our movement and awareness to control these negative effects. Do not sleep on the mental preparation aspect of training. Almost every well-established Olympic coaching team incorporates and takes mental preparation seriously. The mental game bridges the gap between physically fit, and well-conditioned. It bridges the gap between knowing a drill or movement and executing that drill or movement when someone is trying to harm you, or when the pressure is truly being applied. Start incorporating 10-15 minutes of mental visualization and start learning to prepare for the body's biological response to it.
