What questions should I ask my Professor? So many questions run through the mind of a new and seasoned BJJ student. You might be asking yourself, what is the right question to help me continue to grow and develop? Here are a few common questions to ask your instructor next time you are in class. - Which techniques work best for my body type? This question is a great one to ask, especially to an instructor with a similar body type. Everybody type has advantages and disadvantages with moves and asking your coach or professor, who watches you roll regularly, can be a great way to focus your attention to specific techniques in a variety of situations. - Why does this move work? This is an excellent question that forces you to understand the mechanics and concepts that make a particular move work. You can then start looking at Jiu Jitsu from a concept perspective rather than just applying moves, help recognize when a move won't work and when to transition, as well as beginning to chain things together from a reaction you know will occur. - What should I be focusing on? Nobody knows better than your professor or coach on what you should be working on at your current level. Maybe you are good at a certain guard or pass and it's time to try something new. Maybe you are good from bottom but struggle on top. Asking this question can help you focus on an uncomfortable position and continue to improve. - How do I prepare for competition? Thinking about competing can be a bit nerve wracking. Ask your professor or coach what you can do to prepare. They can assist you in developing a game plan, going over the rule set and point system, as well as how to prepare physically and mentally. Don't be afraid to ask questions! We are all here to learn!
